Cavities and gingivitis (gum disease) are believed to be caused by an accumulation of plaque, so it would seem most important to control the plaque to prevent dental problems.
We know you want to keep your teeth for a lifetime, so it just makes sense to religiously and with fervor do what all dentists recommend. You know what we're talking about, brush your teeth at least twice a day and go for professional dental cleaning at least twice a year.
These truly are the most important ways of protecting you teeth from cavities and gingivitis...and in case you don’t know what gingivitis is, you're lucky! But it can and does occur and if gingival inflammation becomes chronic it can lead to periodontitis, which can cause your teeth to loosen and fall out!
Bacterial accumulation causes plaque, so with a daily assault of bacteria in our mouths, it makes sense to combat it with any weapons we may have. Those weapons are your toothbrush, dental floss and mechanical methods (those employed by your dental hygienist). Many factors contribute to gum disease; including smoking, diabetes, certain medications, hormonal changes in women, genetics, cancer and AIDs treatments.
If you have a serious problem with bacteria, your dentist may recommend chemical plague control. That could include antibiotics, oxygenating agents, enzymes, phenolic compounds, fluoride and other antiseptics.
